Merimbula Scout Groups - Aviation Camp

  23rd to 24th Aug 2025

Over the weekend, scouts from across the district came together for an unforgettable adventure in the world of aviation. Hosted by 1st Merimbula Scouts and held at the unique Frogs Hollow community airstrip, the camp was all about learning, creating, and exploring the skies. With the support of the Frogs Hollow Flyers and the Bega Model Air Club, our young aviators got the chance to dive into flight from every angle. Scouts discovered how planes defy gravity to take off, how weather can change the course of a flight, and what pilots need to know about navigation and the rules of the air. They even got up close to real aircraft - high wing and low wing planes, a gyrocopter and a paramotor trike- and heard from experienced pilots who shared their passion for flying. A huge highlight was when the kids became creators and pilots themselves! Joeys, Cubs, and Scouts all had the chance to build and test their own planes, launching them into the air with huge smiles. Not stopping there, they also built and rigged colourful kites, then raced across the airstrip to see them soar high above the camp. Of course, the experience of camping right next to the airstrip—something most people can only dream of—gave the weekend an extra sense of excitement and adventure. From the first tent pitched to the last plate of breakfast shared, the air was buzzing with stories, laughter, and new ‘aviator’ friendships. Across the sections, Scouts, Cubs and Joeys didn’t just learn about aviation—they lived it. They came away with new skills, unforgettable memories, and plenty of stories to tell about planes, kites, and the magic of flight. This was a camp to remember, one where imaginations soared as high as the kites we flew, and where our young adventurers took their first steps toward owning the skies!
